Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the Best Horror Game of 2017 (so far)

Isaac Smith, Reporter

On January 24, 2017, Capcom released the eleventh installment to the Resident Evil video game series, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

The game is a survival horror game played from the first person perspective. Enter the horrifying world of Ethan Winters as he tries to save his kidnapped wife from the clutches of an insane, mutated family of infected humanlike creatures.

You start by entering the family’s house, where you meet many horrors such as traps, monsters, and family members who all have their own unique qualities.

Immersion for the game is very good, as the great graphics and good optimization gives the game good performance on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC. I personally played through it on the PC.

The game is playable with the PlaystationVR  (virtual reality) headset for maximum immersion and realism.

Graphics quality is very good, even on the lower performing consoles.

The game features puzzle solving and obtainable items as ways to move the story along, and are necessary for completion of the game.

Such puzzles include completing tasks to open doors, finding keys for doors, and using items to obtain other items.

You are able to pick up items that help you with the game, like healing herbs, ammunition, and keys for doors. Unlike some other survival horror games like Outlast, RE7:BH allows the player to use weapons to defend themselves. Usable weapons include guns, knives, flamethrowers, and grenade launchers.

The jumpscares, complimented by well- implemented sound effects, leads to much screaming, shock, and not wanting to play the game any more; however, finishing the game is a rewarding experience as you look back at what you had to do to defeat the game.

The game is available for purchase from the Xbox Live marketplace for digital downloads to the Xbox One, available for digital download for the Playstation 4, and available on Steam for download to the PC. You are also able to purchase it through the Microsoft app store on Windows 10 PC’s, and if you purchase it for the Xbox One, you get a download code for Windows 10 PC’s, as a bonus for buying it on the Xbox.

Graphics: Good quality textures, great lighting effects, and good performance earns this game a great rating of 9/10.

Gameplay: Interesting story, good character development, the atmosphere of the game kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Implementation of virtual reality for the PS4 helps give the game a gameplay rating of 9/10.

Story: The story stays interesting throughout the game, and at the end, there is the option to alter the last part of the game. Video tapes that you can pick up during the game show what happened in the same place, but earlier in time. These give the player a chance to see what to do to keep going in the game, as well as giving an idea of what happened before the character arrived at the house. 8/10

Controls: As with most PC games, keyboard and mouse controls are fully customizable, and it supports the use of controllers, an added bonus. The biggest plus for this game is the use of virtual reality for the Playstation 4 version of the game. 10/10

Audio/ Music: Throughout the game, there is great usage of sound effects, as well as music to add to the overall creepy atmosphere of the game. Well- timed effects made for great jumpscares and at certain times, music made the whole game a lot scarier. 9/10

Overall: The game was amazing. Although I somewhat dreaded sitting at my computer to play when it was dark outside to play it for this review, it was well worth it.
