SINGLE REVIEW: C H A N N E L S by Close Encounter

Malcolm McDowall, Reporter

The fourth single by Close Encounter has been released February 13, 2017, on Bandcamp

Close Encounter’s fourth single, ‘Channels’, from this list of recent releases has come out showing more of the band’s poppy side.

My first impression of the song is familiar, the production and songwriting are similar to the other singles that have been released by Close Encounter. However, there are a lot of redeeming qualities about the song, many of which give much more verity to the “Pop” half of their self-proclaimed genre than their past releases.

Single Art for ‘Channels’ by Close Encounter

‘Channels’ follows a regular pop song structure but is littered with plenty of Close Encounter pizzaz, like a mellow distorted guitar solo, and the dreamy synth pads you wouldn’t soon find in the average pop song. The hook in this song is a lot more catchy than in previous tracks but isn’t so generic you could pull it off any old radio station. It’s obvious there isn’t a specific formula being followed, rather just a lot of influence taken from modern pop music trends.

It is unclear whether or not this finishes off a chapter in Close Encounter’s apparent reformatting as a band and as a brand but on the Bandcamp page for ‘Channels’ you can buy all four singles released by Close Encounter in one package.
