Marvel Studios and Ryan Coogler’s superhero movie “Black Panther” has become a global success, grossing a jaw dropping $427 million in global ticket sales.

“Black Panther” centers around a fictional African nation called Wakanda, which outsiders wrongly believe to be an impoverished country but is actually a wealthy society with the most advanced technology in the world. The movie features Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, and more talented actors. It is the first superhero blockbuster with a mostly black cast and a black director.

“Black Panther” scored the largest box office debuts ever in West Africa and East Africa. In South Africa “Black Panther” had the third highest opening ($1.4 million), coming in behind the two most recent “Fast and Furious” movies. Big-screen company in Africa such as Imax Corp. said that their theaters in Kenya and Nigeria had the biggest turn out ever.

The excitement for the movie goes well beyond Africa. The film posted big numbers in unexpected countries, including Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Israel and Pakistan. The largest international box-office results for “Black Panther” came from South Korea, which generated $27.1 million in the box office.

The cast is still waiting to see how it does in other countries. “Black Panther” opens in Russia next weekend, followed by Japan and China (the world’s second-largest country for movies) in March.

“Black Panther” is having such success for many reasons. The movie positively represents Africa as the beautiful continent it is, which Hollywood rarely does. The costumes created by Ruth E. Carter are a mixture of traditional African attire and modern day trends. The movie also does a great job of casting women for traditional men positions. Danai Gurira plays the commander in chief and her army is made up of strong, smart, beautiful black women. Letitia Wright plays the little sister who is also the technology expert. This movie is so important because it breaks many stereotypes that Hollywood has previously promoted.

The films release also comes less than two months after President Trump was quoted using vulgar language to insult immigrants from African countries.

Not only is this film an overdue embrace of diversity and representation, it is a film that actually has an important deeper meaning. The films overall message is one that is so crucial especially in today’s society. All countries need to learn how to work together and act as one big tribe.

The “Black Panther” is a very big deal! So much that even former first lady Michelle Obama tweeted to congratulate the cast.

“Congrats to the entire #blackpanther team! Because of you, young people will finally see superheroes that look like them on the big screen. I loved this movie and I know it will inspire people of all backgrounds to dig deep and find the courage to be heroes of their own stories.”
