One of the most iconic sports victories in American history was the underdog American hockey team upsetting the powerhouse Soviet team at the Lake Placid Olympic games in 1980.

Now, ESPN’s 30 for 30 series has produced “Miracles of Men” which brilliantly documents this iconic win. Whenever people think of this win, they think of the happiness of the U.S., but this film takes a different viewpoint, capturing this moment in sports through the lens of the Soviets.

The 1980 Soviet team were the baddest team around, but in reality they were a good group of men. They were the heavy favorites going into the Olympic Finals, especially after having crushed the Americans just a week prior to the gold medal match.

The team, nicknamed the Big Red Machine and led by legendary Anatoli Tarasov, was confident going into the game, but on one Friday evening in Lake Placid, the hockey world would be changed forever. The Americans won the gold by beating the Soviets, 4-3.

This unique documentary tells the story so close to so many Americans, but from the view of the enemy.  It is well worth viewing.
