Varsity wrestler Connor Mahoney reflects on his season

Varsity wrestler Connor Mahoney won an exhibition match on Thursday, January 7 against a wrestler that weighed 15 pounds more, an indication of his success this season.

“Mahoney likes wrestling bigger opponents and it shows,” said the Blanchet announcements. “He always gets off the mat with a smile.”

Mahoney, a sophomore, has wrestled for two years. This is his first year on varsity. Last year, he wrestled on JV.

“I joined as a wrestler because I’m bad at ball sports,” said Mahoney. “Wrestling has provided me with a friendly community which I feel welcome in.”

Mahoney says that he wins more than he loses, but could definitely improve.

“I’m a naturally lazy person,” said Mahoney. “I need to find a way to motivate myself more as an individual to improve and win more often.”

While there have been many individual wins for the wrestling team, the team has been struggling with forfeits this season.

“The team could be doing better,” said Mahoney. “A lot of people are quitting because it is hard or because they are struggling with classes.”

Mahoney and the other wrestlers have several more matches before the season comes to a close. The next wrestling tournament is the JV Arlington Tourney on Saturday, January 9.
