Varsity Girls’ Tennis shrugs off a loss with a smile

The season looks bright for varsity girls tennis regardless of a tough season opener. The team played the Garfield Bulldogs on Thursday March 17th. They lost 9 matches, but won two as well. Regardless of their loss, the team isn’t too upset.

“Our team is going to do great this year.” said junior Ashley Wood. “We have a solid group of girls that always work well together on and off the court.”

The success of the season all starts in daily practices. During practice, the girls play matches, practice volleys and serving, and most of all, have fun. The coaches constantly push towards giving constructive criticism, but also having a good time.

“It’s a high energy environment. Our motto is ‘If you’re not having fun, you’re fired!'” said junior Sam Conroy. “We guarantee that of you come out to a match, you’ll have a blast.”

One particularly strong link on the team is senior captain Katie Odland. With her positive attitude and joking personality, Odland constantly keeps team morale up. She hopes to go to the state tournament this year with her partner, the aforementioned Conroy.

“We already show so much potential. I can tell that this season is going to be very successful for the whole team.” said Odland “It’s my fourth and final year on the blanchet tennis team and all I hope is that this last season goes by really slow; I don’t want it to end. I think a lot of our players can make a good showing in districts and maybe even state!”

The next match for the braves is on Tuesday, March 22 at their home courts down at Lower Woodland. The matches start at 3:30 and are against rivals Seattle Prep.
