Our Lady of Victory… Pray for Us!

Hard work and dedication in the preseason set the Blanchet boys swim team up to defeat the Roosevelt Roughriders December 2 with a score of 115-55.

“You don’t have to be a senior to be considered a leader,” said coach Meaghan McCloskey. “If you’re a good teammate, that will get recognized.”

Proving the leadership of all of the swimmers, many individuals set high standards for themselves and their teammates. In their first meet of the season, the Braves’ determination led to Junior, Conor Moore earning a spot at Metros for the 50 freestyle. Additionally, with a time of 1:02.34, junior captain Jack Schrader, qualified for State in the 100 breaststroke.

“We say a Hail Mary followed by Coach Mike shouting “Our Lady of Victory” and the team shouting back “Pray for Us!”,” said coach Meaghan. “After that, the captains lead the team in the cheer.”

Traditions such as this one before each meet keep them focused on competing their best and representing each other and Blanchet with pride. Team unity is a core value of the team. Empowering and encouraging each other everyday leads them to remain as one team.

“We all say a team prayer before meets,” said head coach Mike McCloskey. “In this day and age it is unusual, but it keeps us centered on what our purpose is on earth.”

The Braves use prayer to be centered on the greater reason why they were brought on the team. They are there to represent Blanchet, enjoy the sport of swimming, and make long-lasting friendships. They incorporate their faith into a sport they love to make the swim team mean more than just swimming.

The boys swim team will travel to Ballard to race the Beavers this Friday, December 9 at 4:00PM.
