On Sunday January 7, 2018, the 74th annual Golden Globes was hosted at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The 66th Cecil B. DeMille Award was given to former talk show host and entertainer, Oprah Winfrey.

The presentation of this award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” made history as Winfrey was the first African American woman to receive it. Her acceptance speech was seen by many as a dip into the political world.

Winfrey spoke on how honored she was to be the first African American woman to receive this award. She also reminisced on the memory of watching from her living room as a young girl as Sidney Poitier become the first African American male to receive the same award. She spoke about how inspired she was by this.

“I think the speech was very well written,” said junior Adele Peck, co-founder of the Bishop Blanchet feminism club. “[It was] empowering and was deeply personal because of her own experiences.”

All attendees of the Golden Globes were encouraged to wear black, symbolizing the sexual assault cases that have lately been a popular topic of conversation across the country. Winfrey also gave her opinion on this movement with wise words that pleased many people across the nation.

Now the question is would Oprah make a good candidate in the 2020 presidential election?

This has been a popular topic of conversation across the media for the past few days. With Winfrey’s well written speech and wise words, it doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

Four years ago, political experts may have thought the idea of Winfrey for president was ridiculous because of her little political experience, but after the election of President Trump, anyone can become president.

“I think Oprah is honestly one of the most important and necessary people in this country right now,” said senior Peter Dyer.

Dyer feels strongly that Winfrey would make an excellent first female president.

Winfrey has yet to speak publicly on the idea of running for president, but Trump has sure had a lot to say about it.

According to a CNN article, Trump told members of congress, “Yeah, I’ll beat Oprah.” However, Trump has great respect for Winfrey and featured on her talk show multiple times.

With the reaction Winfrey’s speech is getting from citizens all across the country, if she did take the idea of running for president seriously, there is a chance she could win and make a really positive change in this country–one that is long overdue.
