On Friday, January 19, the boys swim team took a trip over to Medgar-Evers Pool and surprised themselves and O’Dea by winning the meet and having some of the best races the team has had all season.

Senior captain Paul Codd was the swimmer of the meet and sent himself to districts. Not only did he send himself to districts, but he also helped the team win the meet by winning the last leg of the race for the B relays.

“I don’t mean to sound egotistical or self centered at all, but I would say I had the most impressive swims of the night,” said Paul Codd. “I dropped a second in the 200 freestyle to get 3rd in the heat, and 11 seconds in the 500 freestyle to get 2nd place. I also helped the B relays take 3rd place as the last leg, which is a huge swing of points late in the meet.”

Going into the meet, the boys knew the meet would be tough, but they beat their own expectations and won the meet overall.

“Everyone had a great meet overall, which resulted in the team winning,” said junior Henri Coronado-Volta, “Twenty-two of our swimmers have qualified for metros, which includes thirteen of them qualifying for districts. Juniors Michael Lin and  Evan Zerev,  senior Jack Schrader, and sophomore Ryan Gamble have all qualified for state.”
