Not All Flu Seasons are Created equally

We are in the midst of one of the worst flu seasons in the past 15 years with school closings, hospitals resorting to tents to account for the mass amounts of patients, and several people dead.

So just what makes this flu season worse than the rest? According to The California Department of Public Health, the epidemic has killed 74 people this flu season. In the same window last year, only one person was left dead. However, some Americans are still unphased by the epidemic.

“Get back to me when it affects more people,” said senior Katie Merrywell.

Many are unaware that the flu is so much worse this year.

“What flu epidemic?” asked Maylynn Lee when it was mentioned to her.

Here at Blanchet, we have had a few cases of the flu. Senior Anna Reese was out of school for five days the week before finals. She threw up for three days straight and experienced a dry, painful cough.

“I basically died,” said Reese.

There are no special ways to prevent getting this flu. Many have been discouraged to learn that you can still come down with the flu even if you have been vaccinated. This may be true, however the flu shot still combats the flu so if you are vaccinated you are better protected if you do happen to get sick.

Most pharmacies offer the flu shot for little to no cost, and flu season will continue well into February.
