Reflections on the 2016 JV Volleyball Season

After a season of hard work and long hours in the gym, the Junior Varsity Volleyball team has come away with a 11-3 season record and a new love for the sport as November comes around marking the end of volleyball at Bishop Blanchet for 2016.

Captains Carly Henling and Cameron Ferguson have played a huge role this season. Their leadership on the court succeeded in keeping the team on track and allowed for the vibrant atmosphere of teamwork to be very apparent throughout even the team’s most difficult matches.

Carly Henling, an exemplary player, led the team in kills, and had such power behind her swings she would often leave the other team looking around, clueless as to what they could have done to stop her.

“This season was one of the best seasons of my life,” said Henling. Her love for the team and coaches is evident through her words. “Not only did I learn skills on the court, but I learned valuable life lessons. I learned what it means to be a team member and always have each other’s backs I learned how to focus my attention on one goal and strive to achieve that goal. Kyle always said ‘focus up ladies’ and that really motivated me. Braves volleyball is a great experience, and a great learning opportunity.”

Cameron Ferguson brought a strong head game to the court. Her ability to recognize the opposing team’s faults and holes in defense gave the JV team an advantage every game.

“I thought our season was very successful! Not only did we win a lot of games but we also had a lot of fun together as a team,” said Ferguson. “Playing for Blanchet volleyball is definitely a big commitment, but it’s all worth it in the end. Playing for Blanchet also taught me about sportsmanship and how to be a good teammate on and off the court.”

For both captains, the true experience in playing the sport extends past the physical labor. What remains after the season is a plethora of life lessons that apply to all areas of their life.
