On Thursday, March 23rd, the 2016 Braves Track and Field team headed South to take on Rainier Beach and West Seattle at Rainier Beach.

Entering into the first meet of the season, the team felt confident in their preparations and skills. Each individual athlete excelled in their event, some more than others but there is a whole season left to improve. The competition was tough but the Braves never gave up.

Third year runner, Joseph Halverson ran one 400 meter lap and came in first for that event.

“I think,” said Halverson, “I can keep improving by setting goals and continuing to work towards them. The grind never stops, I will keep working.”

A Freshman runner, Riley Wallace was a first time hurdler who ran his events on a sprained ankle. He showed great sportsmanship and commitment and placed 3rd in the 300 hurdles. He himself chose to run with a hurt ankle because track is a team sport and he wanted to show dedication to his team.

“As a whole I think the team did an excellent job,” said junior runner, Jeremiah Stone, “we prevailed through hardships and doubts and did our best which I thought was great. The beauty of the competition is you learn how to better yourself by learning from your mistakes.”

Even though the Braves lost a few events and didn’t end in first, the team stayed positive throughout the meet and confidently cheered on the rest of their teammates that were competing.

“Even though we didn’t get first,” said junior participant, Sophia Lacambra, “we had great energy today and we’re supportive of one another, and kept positive even through the rain!”

The Braves Track and Field team competes next at the Arnie Young Invite at Renton Memorial stadium on Saturday April 2nd and urges fans to come out and support the brave competitors.
