La La Land Sings Its Way Into People’s Hearts

From the opening number to the ending twist, the new musical film, La La Land, proves to be a true masterpiece.

La La Land tells the story of a young woman named Mia, played by Emma Stone, trying to make it in the show business. Set in Los Angeles, Stone’s character is shown getting turned away from countless auditions while maintaining her job as a barista. Although it has nothing to do with the rest of the film, the opening number is a bright and happy tune resembling a flash mob in the middle of L.A. traffic. It is after this number that we see the first of Ryan Gosling’s character, Sebastian, interact with Stone’s. As Mia continuously runs into Sebastian, a jazz enthusiast and skilled pianist, he opens her mind up to an idea bigger and riskier than simply acting. After a beautiful dance and choral number overlooking L.A., the song they were singing about never falling in love with one another, “A Lovely Night”, proves to be ironic. La La Land chronicles Mia’s and Sebastian’s relationship as they each struggle navigating toward their dreams, and pushes the audience to reach for their own.

“It’s conflict and it’s compromise, and it’s very, very exciting,” said Gosling as Sebastian.

A heart-wrenching tale, La La Land goes above and beyond in drawing out the audience’s emotions. The plot follows what the audience least expects – for all you know they could start dancing in the stars.

This is not the next Hairspray or Mama Mia! but rather a film of a more olden day style. Unlike these modernized musical-turned-movies, La La Land reminds Blanchet junior Chiara Procaccio of a Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers production. La La Land was not created just as entertainment, but as a piece of art.

Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the director of award-winning Whiplash and now Golden Globe recipient for Best Director, La La Land won a total of seven Golden Globe awards. Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture and Best Screenplay were both received. Winning Best Original Score, the film’s album included the stage couple’s song, “City of Stars”, which also won Best Original Song.

Gosling and Stone both won Best Actor/Actress in a Musical or Comedy. The two were first seen as a couple on screen in 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love. The passion showed back then was put on the back burner in order to show a more dynamic relationship.

This year’s hit musical film, La La Land, is an entrancing, thought-provoking motion picture that will blow you away! Now playing at a theater near you.
