A New Home

Bishop Blanchet’s welcoming community attracts students not only from the surrounding Seattle area, but from all around the world, and Renjie Chen, an incoming senior at Bishop Blanchet is happy to have found his niche in this school.

Leaving his home in 2013 in Shanghai, China to commence a new journey that would last four years, Chen had high hopes for what was to come.

Fearing a lack of integration in his new community, he was pleased to find a strong connection with his teammates on the football team. This team helped establish long-lasting friendships not only with people in his graduating class of 2017, but upperclassmen as well.

Teachers have also been a source of guidance in his years at Bishop Blanchet.

“If you have any questions, go find a teacher, they will be willing to help you.” Renjie said.

The first teacher to facilitate his move was Mr. Finnegan, and his passion for education and welcoming demeanor allowed Chen to feel excited for the academic aspect of school.

He has faced some tribulations; it has not always been a smooth ride. Chen recalls falling into Green Lake sophomore year and losing his phone in the process. However, classmates were quick to check in, maybe after a few chuckles.

His advice to exchange students is to get involved in student activities, whether it be sports or clubs that interest you.

And on life away from home, “Don’t worry too much, thanks to technology like Skype and video messaging, home doesn’t seem so far away.”.
